Frequently Asked Questions
On the National Maximum Taxi Fare...

Why is my fare increased?

A new national fare structure and rates became effective from 25 September 2006. In some areas of the country, this has resulted in a number of increases.

What is the difference between Taxi & Hackney fares?

A hackney is not subject to fare control, the fare must be agreed in advance with the customers. A taxi is subject to the new National Maximum Taxi Fare structure which requires all taxi fares to be charged on the meter. All taxis must provide all passengers with a receipt printed by the printer attached to the taximeter.

When should I tip?

Passengers may give tips or gratuities at their discretion to acknowledge good service.

When can a discount be applied?

A discount can be given at the discretion of the driver. Can I ask for a discount? Yes but a driver is not obliged to give a discount.

When should the meter start in a wheelchair taxi?

When the journey starts, or before the driver provides assistance to the passenger to enter the vehicle.

When should the meter stop?

When you arrive at your destination.

What are extra charges?

Extra charges are applied as follows:

Booking charge
Maximum €2.00 for journeys that are pre-booked.

Extra passenger
€1.00 per adult (two children under twelve will be charged as one adult)

Road toll charges
Cost of the road toll may be added to the taxi fare.

Soiling charge
€125.00

What constitutes soiling?

Soiling is deemed as any damage to the vehicle which may require professional cleaning to restore the vehicle to its previous condition, and / or would remove the vehicle from use as a small public service vehicle for a period of time.

Can you be charged for multiple stops?

No - the new National Maximum Taxi Fare structure includes waiting time to compensate the driver for any time the vehicle is stationary.

What is the changeover speed?

If the vehicle's speed drops to below 21 kilometers per hour, the meter starts to calculate the fare based on time. If the vehicle speeds up to above 21 kilometers per hour, the meter switches to calculate based on distance traveled.

How do I know if the meter is working?

The initial charge displayed covers the first kilometer of distance traveled or 170 seconds of time taken. The taximeter will increment the displayed fare in units of 20 cent value. Each 20 cent unit represents a measure of either distance traveled or time taken.

How can I tell if the meter is sealed?

The Legal Metrology Service is responsible for the verification and sealing of all taximeters. This is usually done by applying a small lead seal to the side of the meter. If this appears to be broken or tampered with in any way, the meter may not be verified.

How can I tell if the meter is programmed for the correct charges?

In-vehicle information on the back windows of the small public service vehicle and also on the sun visor at the front passenger seat provides details of the national maximum taxi fare structure. As a rule of thumb, the initial charge should be displayed as €3.80 standard rate or €4.10 premium rate.

Should all fares be priced on the meter / can the meter be turned off?

When a journey is pre-booked, customers may waive their right to have a particular journey charged on the meter. In this situation a prior written agreement must be signed by both the driver and the passenger.
