Taxi Drivers urged to contact their local TD's

The I.T.D.F. and N.T.D.U. are organising a campaign for drivers regarding the instability within the taxi profession. The two groups are requesting drivers to write to the taxi regulator, their local T.D, or Minister for Transport Mr. Noel Dempsey, to express their concerns regarding their future in the business. The main areas of concerns are:- 1. The number of licences that have been issued and are continuing to be issued. The number of taxi increased in Dublin on 21st November 2000 was 2,722. Today we have over 11,000. The number countrywide has increased from 3.900 to approx. 19,000. 2.The number of fares per day to make a taxi viable is 10, therefore we would need 1,330,000 fare per week to survive. Prior to deregulation we only needed 273,000 per week to survive; now we would need an extra million fares per week. This figure is not possible to achieve. 3.Taxi Rank spaces There are only sufficient taxi rank spaces to park 6% of the legally licenced taxis that are licenced to operate in Ireland. The I.T.D.F. and N.T.D.U. are meeting the taxi regulator on 5th March 2008 to discuss the instability in the business and the problems that exist for taxi drivers. Remember drivers your representative bodies can only do so much, the onus is now on drivers to play their part and contact the regulators office, T.D. or minister. The two groups plan to meet the Minister for Transport, Mr. Noel Dempsey to discuss our concerns within the taxi industry. Drivers who are contemplating purchasing new or second had wheelchair accessible cars should be aware that the criteria for free wheelchair space is being strictly enforced and they should contact the regulators office (01-6593800) or the NCT centre in city west (1890 927973) to see if the vehicle will be passed out.
